In this research project, we are looking for people who can tell us a little bit about themselves and their experience of pain and emotional responses in various settings. It is important to note that the tools we are using are not designed for those with long-term chronic conditions or severe pain disorders, so the research is not suitable for people with these conditions. In this study, we will be asking you a range of questions about how you experience pain in areas such as sport and exercise but also in everyday domains. We also have some questions that will only be asked if you indicate that you belong to certain broad groups like university students or you play electronic games. However, if you are uncomfortable with any question, you can skip it.
Please read this Explanatory Statement in full before deciding whether or not to participate in this research. If you would like further information regarding any aspect of this project, you are encouraged to contact the Chief Investigator via the email address listed above. This project is a collaboration with student researchers led by the Chief Investigator, Dr Nicholas Gamble.
What does the research involve?
This online study seeks to understand how people experience pain and emotional responses in a range of settings that might broadly be considered to require effort or have an element of competition or comparison to others. In looking at how people manage their pain and emotional responses, we will look at how they view the world around them and interact with others. We will also collect demographic information about you, but we will not be able to identify you.
The questionnaire will take approximately 20-40 minutes to complete. Because some questions will only be asked to some groups, a broad estimation of time is provided. There are no consequences for leaving question items blank if you prefer.
Consenting to participate in the project and withdrawing from the research
If you would like to take part in this study, you will need to provide consent by clicking on the link below and taking part in the questionnaire on the following page of this website. Participants have the right to withdraw from further participation at any stage during the questionnaire. However, because participation is anonymous, questionnaire data will not be able to be withdrawn once responses have been provided.
Possible benefits and risks to participants
There is no direct benefit to you from undertaking this research. However, we hope that this research will help us better understand how people experience and manage their pain and emotional responses in a range of settings. From this information we may be able to develop better interventions for supporting people in the future.
If you experience significant ongoing pain, we recommend not participating in this research project.
For all other potential participants in the unlikely event that you experience discomfort following participation in the survey, or if you have concerns regarding your own wellbeing generally, please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or www.lifeline.org.au/
Confidentiality
The questionnaire is anonymous. General demographic information will be requested however it is unlikely that this would be sufficient to reveal an individual’s identity to the researchers. We will de-identify any information that we believe might lead to your identity being revealed. The data will be collected through the Qualtrics website (based in the USA). This site is the Faculty of Education’s preferred data collection tool which collects and stores data securely (Security statement can be seen here: https://www.qualtrics.com/security-statement/). The completed questionnaire will be stored securely on Monash University servers which comply with the university’s guidelines on privacy. Data access will be password protected and restricted to those on the research team. All data will be kept for a minimum of 7 years and will then be destroyed (multi-wipe deletion).
Results
Findings of this study will be used for student theses and may be submitted for publication in professional publications, academic journals or conferences. Given the anonymous nature of the data, individual participants will not be identifiable in such publications.
